New Director of the Vienna State Opera

In December 2016, the Austrian Arts and Culture Minister Bogdan Roščić was designated as the new director of the Vienna State Opera. His contract starts in 2020 and will run until 2025.

He is known as one of top managers of the classical music scene of the central Europe. His international competence and managerial experience will bring back the enthusiasm to Vienna’s leading opera house. In the first statement, Roščić told the press that he will embrace his responsibilities with love and passion. In 2022, the Vienna State Opera will celebrate the 125th anniversary of Gustav Mahler’s inauguration as opera house director. His absolute artistic and creative determination was trendsetting. The new director also wants to revive these features of Austrian opera in the future.

Bogdan Roščić was born in Belgrade in 1964. He studied philosophy and musicology before started his career at one of Austrian newspapers. Some years later, the music critic became the director of Austria’s most successful radio station. OE3 was very successful under his leadership, and so he got an offer to move to Universal Music Austria. This was his start for a long and successful career in the international music industry that has opened the abilities to work in Austria, Germany, and New York. His designation in 2016 was a big surprise because he has been considered as a critical voice. Very soon he has started to work in Vienna and presented his first program.

Philippe Jordan is the New Music Director

One of his first decisions was unexpected because he hired a new music director. The previous one Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Möst abruptly quit his job in 2014 because of “irreconcilable differences of opinion regarding the company’s artistic planning and profile.” Philippe Jordan was the music director of the Paris Opera and the chief conductor of the Vienna Symphony. He is also well-known in opera houses all over the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, the Bayreuth Festival, and many others. He will join Bogdan Roščić as the new music director of the Vienna State Opera soon. Together they will shape the future of this opera house. Roščić is convinced that Jordan’s knowledge and experience is a great value. He has worked in Vienna and Salzburg for a long time and has a good relationship with the audience. Jordan said that his new position is going to be a great challenge.
